Chapter IV: What I've Learned

The truth as I see it concerning low carb and weight loss

Before I start I must give credit to Dr. Gregory Ellis. It was his website and ultimately his book which I purchased which elevated my success to a new level. It was also through his website that I discovered the Caltrac.

Thank you Dr. Ellis as well as Dr. Atkins. You have both had a monumental affect on my life.

Energy... it’s all about energy. We consume energy, we store energy, and we burn energy. This energy is measured with what we commonly refer to as calories.

My problem with the Atkins approach is the lack of focus on calorie intake. I have seen far too many people stall or plateau and look to the wrong thing for answers, usually their carb count. In my opinion, the Atkins approach has been far too vague on the subject of caloric consumption. There is so much benefit to eating low carb. I do not understand why they hesitate to include in their approach the importance of monitoring your caloric intake while simultaneously reaping the rewards of those benefits.

To lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume. That’s it. That’s the big secret that nobody seems to want to say. Burn more and eat less. That’s it.

So why low carb then?

The advantage of low carb is that it is a natural appetite suppressant. If you’ve ever tried to follow a low fat diet for any period of time you know what I’m talking about. Taking away the disadvantage of feeling hungry or put another way... taking advantage of low carb’s feeling of satiation, is half the battle.

Another advantage is that eating low carb often enables one to avoid cravings for sweets. It does this by controlling your insulin. An important note here would be that if you indulge in sugar alcohols you may very well eliminate this advantage and perhaps the previously mentioned one as well. Eat them at your own risk but remember this when you start wondering why you seem to have become addicted to them and/or your eating seems to be getting out of control.

My tools to weight loss and the elimination (for most) of plateaus and stalling

  1. BMR
  2. Fitday
  3. Caltrac
  4. Scale that measures body fat and one that weighs your food
  5. Journal
  6. Support Group

Let’s go through them one at a time
